Combining the old with the new. Earthy. Sustainability. Multi-use spaces.
These are some of the concepts influencing interior design trends for 2021.
When combining old and new, antiques, retro and repurposed pieces can be combined with contemporary furnishings and accents to create a “rustic vogue” feel. Tying the pieces together with repetitive spots of color can create balance and harmony throughout a home. This more sophisticated approach to decorating with vintage pieces works very well in rooms that have original floors, exposed beams or other features that bring in vestiges of the past.
A cozier, more simplistic design trend that emphasizes earthiness and bringing the outside in is cottagecore. Taking its inspiration from old-time farming, nature and countryside living, corragecore has become more of an overall aesthetic movement. It is reflected in decorating with dried and fresh flowers, houseplants, color spots of gingham and checks and wicker furnishings. Add to this natural look a color palette with neutrals and warm tones. With everyone spending more and more time at home in 2020, cottagecore is influencing not only interior design but also fashion—think peasant dresses, long gathered skirts and billowy blouses. And outdoor activities such as picnics and bonfires bring people together.
Sustainability is reflected in 2021 interior design in choices that support reusing, recycling and restoring. For instance, innovative firms are incorporating buy adderall plastic trash and reclaimed wood into attractive contemporary furniture. Maximizing energy efficiency and minimizing waste are becoming axioms for interior design in all its iterations.
In 2021, the emerging design trends embrace living spaces that have multiple uses: A kitchen, living and dining area that incorporates an at-home, home-school study nooks and even guest accommodations made possible by sleeper-sofas. Room dividers, rugs for defining spaces, curtains, screens, and movable walls can be used to close off sections of the multi-purpose rooms for privacy.
As more and more individuals work from home (WFH), design trends will continue to adapt in 2021 to provide comfort, inspiration and functionality for all ages in a myriad of living spaces.
